There are some exciting plans ahead for the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.  

MLK and Crenshaw Blvds. #BHCP

You can expect an additional 2 million square feet to be added, tons more parking, easier pedestrian access and the Metro Line will have a portal stop that leads right into the Plaza!

Metro and Walsh/Shea Corridor Contractors tonight will close Crenshaw Boulevard, between Jefferson Boulevard and Coliseum Street, for 30 days to begin excavation of Crenshaw/Expo underground station for the Crenshaw/LAX light rail line.

Metro encourages residents, commuters, business owners and shoppers to plan ahead to avoid delays.

"Because we planned ahead, Carmageddon never happened on the 405, so let's plan ahead on Crenshaw. This is a critical step to delivering an infrastructure investment to build a stronger South L.A. and a stronger regional transportation network for us all," said Los Angeles Mayor and Metro Board Chair Eric Garcetti. ...READ MORE HERE

Explosion in Leimert Park....

Hi Neighbors...

Just wanted to make sure you all knew about the explosion incident that occurred yesterday Morning involving our neighbor Ms. Ashtonell Smith from 9th Ave.

Ashtonell Smith, age 79

Ms. Smith called the gas company about a week ago to let them know she smelled gas.  When she woke up yesterday morning around 6am, she turned on the dryer to finish her laundry and the dryer exploded, leaving Ms. Smith with 3rd degree burns over 40% of her face and body.  Ms. Smith was transported to USC County Hospital yesterday morning and is critical condition.  Because of her age, she is not expected to survive.  Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Turn Vacant Lots into Green Spaces...Vote for Community Health Councils!!!

Hi Everybody...

My dear friends at the Community Health Councils (CHC) who began The Coalition for an Active South LA, have been working to find ways to repurpose vacant and underutilized lots in South LA to address the shortage and inequities in parks and open space. The work they've done so far in an effort to create healthy living in our community is to be commended!!

Recently, CHC has formed an exciting partnership with Columbia University C-Lab and 596Acres.org to help advance the vision of a greener South LA by giving communities the tools they need to reclaim and re-purpose empty, vacant, underutilized spaces in LA. They have submitted a joint application to help fund the project. The selection process includes a contest that is powered by votes and comments from the online community.

Overall, HERE's WHAT THE PROJECT WILL DO: 

• Map LA’s vacant lots and underutilized land.

• Create a platform for community members to organize around specific vacant lots and transform these into green spaces.
• Decode the process to transform vacant spaces into parks, community gardens, and green space.  
• Launchpad for communities to address disparities in open space access.
• Provides tools for communities to transform their environments and work together to create more open space.
• LA has LOTS of potential.

Ultimately...WE NEED MORE GREEN SPACE

• Open-Space, parks, and community gardens are not equitably distributed in Los Angeles.
• Parks, open-space, and community gardens are not within walking distance for many communities in LA.
• Thousands and thousands of vacant, underutilized, vacant spaces exist in LA that could be better used for green space.
• Vacant land impacts the livability of neighborhoods and the health of communities, particularly those with little green space.
• No one knows just how much vacant land exists in Los Angeles.
